Why There Is No Single Number
The honest answer to what is a good click through rate is that it depends on the channel, the position you already hold and the intent behind the impression. The maths never changes: clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. What changes is the expectation, and the expectation is where almost every published benchmark falls down.
An ad served 12,000 times that earns 384 clicks has a CTR of 3.2 per cent. That is the entire calculation. Everything genuinely difficult about CTR sits in deciding what that number should have been for that placement, that audience and that query.
CTR Means Four Different Things
Before comparing any two CTR figures, check they are measuring the same thing. Email divides by messages delivered, not sent and not opened. Meta reports separate click metrics. Organic search counts an impression every time your result appears, even far down page one, so the denominator is enormous compared with a paid placement.
| Channel | What the figure divides | Where to read it |
| Organic search | Clicks ÷ search impressions | Search Console, Performance report |
| Google Search ads | Clicks ÷ ad impressions | Google Ads, campaign and keyword view |
| Meta ads | Link clicks ÷ impressions, or all clicks ÷ impressions | Ads Manager, column set |
| Email and SMS | Clicks ÷ messages delivered | Your sending platform’s campaign report |
The Meta distinction catches people out constantly. CTR (all) counts reactions, comments, profile taps and photo views alongside the clicks that actually reach your site, so it reads higher and flatters the campaign. Judge a traffic or lead campaign on link CTR or outbound CTR.
Position Sets The Organic Expectation
When a client asks what is a good click through rate in organic search, our first question back is what average position they hold. CTR decays steeply from the top result through positions two and three, then flattens out towards the bottom of page one. A figure that would be excellent at position seven is a quiet failure at position one.
So the signal is the gap, not the raw number. Pull average position and CTR per query in Search Console, then ask whether each query is over or under performing for the position it occupies. That delta tells you where a rewritten title tag or meta description will actually earn something, and where the problem is ranking rather than presentation.
One shift worth planning for is the way AI Overviews and answer panels absorb a share of the clicks that used to reach the blue links, so a page can hold its position while its CTR drifts down. That is a change in the results page rather than a fault to chase.
A High CTR Is Sometimes Bad News
A rising CTR is not automatically a win. Several of the most common causes of a strong-looking average are measurement artefacts, and acting on them wastes budget.
- Brand queries: people searching your business name click at rates nothing else comes close to, and they drag the site or account average up. Segment brand and non-brand before you judge anything.
- Clickbait titles: a title that overpromises lifts CTR and loses the visitor in seconds. Watch what happens to time on page and conversions, not just the click.
- Remarketing and narrow audiences: warm audiences click more, so a display or Meta average built mostly on remarketing tells you little about cold reach.
- Invalid and internal traffic: staff, suppliers and rival businesses checking your ads all land in the same denominator.
Small Samples Produce Fake Verdicts
CTR on a couple of hundred impressions is noise. At low volumes a handful of clicks either way swings the percentage by whole points, which is how businesses end up rewriting a title that was never the problem and undoing a version that was working.
A low-volume account needs a longer window before a CTR reading means anything. Our rule of thumb on client accounts is to let a test gather a meaningful block of impressions across full weeks rather than days, change one element at a time, and compare like periods so seasonality is not doing the talking.
What Each CTR Pattern Tells You To Fix
CTR is a mid-funnel diagnostic, not a business outcome. Read it alongside impressions and conversions and it points straight at the thing to work on.
- High impressions, low CTR: a presentation or intent problem. Rewrite the title and description, match the page to the query, and check whether structured data could earn a richer result.
- High CTR, low conversions: the click is fine and the destination is not. That is a landing page, offer or form problem, which is the territory our guide to website design elements and costs covers.
- Low impressions: CTR is not your issue. You have a ranking or reach problem, and improving a percentage of a tiny number changes nothing.
Our published case study on Sunshine Coast 24hr Towing shows why the pair matters more than either figure alone: rebuilding that Google Ads account brought cost per click down by 47 per cent while the landing page converted at 45.09 per cent. Cheaper, better-matched clicks and a page built to receive them are two different jobs, and hiring a Google Ads agency should get you both.
Quoting A CTR Figure Has Legal Limits
The moment a CTR number appears in a pitch deck, a proposal or a page like this one, it stops being an internal metric and becomes a performance representation. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission states that claims about the performance of a product or service must be accurate and have reasonable grounds behind them when they are made, and that a business can be required to substantiate them with credible evidence.
That is the practical reason we quote our own measured account data with its window and sample attached rather than a survey average. You can stand behind the first and not the second.
Email and SMS carry a second layer. Under the Spam Act 2003, the Australian Communications and Media Authority requires consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe in every commercial electronic message, and its guidance states that an unsubscribe request must be actioned within five working days. A click-through rate lifted by mailing people who never opted in is not a result, and the ACMA publishes practical guidance on avoiding sending spam.
Benchmarking Your Own Accounts
Your own history is a better benchmark than anybody’s published average, because it already holds your industry, your market and your position constant. Three steps get you there.
- 1. Pull the raw data: Search Console for organic, Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager and your email platform, each for the same date range.
- 2. Segment it: split brand from non-brand, remarketing from prospecting, and mobile from desktop before you average anything.
- 3. Compare like with like: measure each segment against the same segment in a prior period, and against the position it holds, not against a global figure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Do I Find My CTR In Google Search Console?
Open the Performance report, switch on the Average CTR and Average Position metrics, then use the Queries and Pages tabs. Filter out your brand name to see what non-brand searchers actually do.
Is A 2 Per Cent CTR Good?
It depends entirely on the channel and the position. The same 2 per cent can be strong for a cold prospecting audience and weak for a branded search ad, which is why we benchmark against your own segmented history instead.
Does CTR Affect Google Rankings
Our position, based on managing client search accounts, is to treat organic CTR as a diagnostic rather than a lever. In Google Ads the link is explicit, since expected CTR is one of the components behind Quality Score and therefore what you pay.
How Is CTR Different From Click-To-Open Rate?
Email CTR divides clicks by messages delivered. Click-to-open divides clicks by unique opens, so it measures the strength of the email content alone once the subject line has done its job. Report both and you can tell which one failed.
Should I Rewrite Title Tags To Lift CTR?
Only for pages with plenty of impressions and a CTR below what their average position would suggest. Rewriting a low-impression page changes nothing measurable, and rewriting a page that is already over-performing risks losing what is working.
