Instagram Ads Are Sold At Auction
Ask “how much is Instagram advertising?” and you will not find a price list, because there isn’t one. You set a budget, and Meta’s auction sets the unit price every time your ad is eligible to appear, based on who else wants that same person at that moment.
Meta’s own advertiser bidding documentation explains that the auction runs the same way whether the campaign is built in Meta’s own ad tools or through the Marketing API, and that what you are charged for depends on the billing event attached to your objective: impressions, clicks, or another defined action.
That is why a cost-per-click table copied from an overseas source is close to useless here. It is priced in another currency, in a different auction, against audiences your business will never bid on.
What You Actually Pay For Each Month
Media spend is one line on the invoice, not the whole invoice. A realistic monthly figure covers the budget you give Meta, the GST on it, creative production, the work of managing the account, and the page the traffic lands on. Budgeting only for media is why campaigns stall in month two.
| Line item | Paid to | How it is billed |
| Media spend | Meta | Auction price, charged to your card |
| GST | Meta | Added as a separate line on the invoice |
| Creative production | Producer, in-house team or agency | Per project or monthly |
| Campaign management | Agency, or your own hours | Monthly |
| Landing page | Web team | One-off build, sometimes hosting |
Receipts released by the Department of Finance under FOI 25-26-060 show Meta ad invoices issued to Australian advertisers carrying GST at 10% as a separate line, with Meta Platforms Ireland Limited named as the seller. Those same receipts show billing is threshold triggered rather than monthly, with the card charged once accrued spend reaches the account’s payment threshold, A$300 in that instance.
The practical consequence is that your spend is lumpier than a subscription at small budgets. The charge lands when the threshold is reached, not on a set date each month.
If the traffic has nowhere good to go, none of the above is worth buying. Budget for the destination at the same time, and our guide to what a website build costs sets out that side of the number.
The Levers That Move Your Cost
Two businesses advertising the same product on the same day can pay very different prices. In our experience running client accounts, most of the gap comes down to a handful of levers, and all of them are under the advertiser’s control except the auction itself.
- Objective and billing event: optimising for a cheap action buys cheap actions. Match the objective to the step in the funnel you actually need filled.
- Audience size and overlap: Australia is a small auction. Narrow targeting in a competitive vertical exhausts the efficient audience quickly, and frequency and cost climb together.
- Creative fatigue: performance decays as the same audience sees the same asset. New concepts on a regular cycle are a cost control, not a nice-to-have.
- Placement: Reels, Stories, Feed and Explore price differently and attract different intent. Blended reporting hides which one is really buying your results.
- Seasonality: auction pressure in Australia follows the local calendar rather than the American one, and competition lifts around local sale periods and the end of the financial year.
- Click quality: a cheap click that never converts is expensive. Judge the click against what it produced, not against its price.
Boosted Posts Are Not Ads Manager

Boosting a post from the app and running a campaign in Ads Manager are different products with different price behaviour. Boosting buys reach against a simplified set of controls. Ads Manager gives you the objective, the placement choices, the bidding controls and the conversion reporting that let you influence what you pay.
Boosting is not useless. It is a reasonable way to put money behind a post that is already performing organically. It is a poor way to buy leads, because the levers that lower a cost per lead are mostly not exposed to you.
Setting A Budget That Can Actually Work
The practical version of “how much is Instagram advertising” is a monthly number, not a cost per click. Work backwards: what a customer is worth, what margin they carry, and how many conversions a week the account needs before Meta’s delivery system has enough signal to optimise on. That volume requirement sets a floor under your budget.
A business selling a high-value service cannot learn anything useful on a few hundred dollars a month, because the account will never accumulate enough conversion events. In that situation the honest advice is to either optimise for an earlier action, such as an enquiry, or spend elsewhere.
For scale, across our client Meta Ads accounts we have managed $1,988,241 in client ad spend across 216 ad accounts, producing 96,069 leads and conversions. Cost per lead across those accounts has ranged from about a dollar in some verticals to more than fifty dollars in others, which is why we will not quote you a cost per lead before seeing your market.
Budgets also scale non-linearly. A tenfold increase in monthly spend in an audience the size of Australia’s pushes you into less responsive buyers well before it would in a larger market.
When Instagram Is Not The Right Spend
Sometimes the right answer to a cost question is to spend the money on another channel. Instagram interrupts people who were not looking for you, which suits demand creation and visual products, and suits emergency or high-intent services much less well.
If your customers search for what you sell at the moment they need it, paid search usually buys cheaper intent, and what a Google Ads agency does is the better starting read. If your margins cannot carry any paid cost per acquisition, the budget belongs in organic visibility instead, which is the ground covered by our SEO for small business page.
A final warning on the numbers themselves. Ads Manager and your CRM will disagree, because attribution windows and modelled conversions do not match a sales ledger. Judge cost against the revenue you can actually bank.
The Rules Your Ads Must Follow
Compliance is part of the cost of advertising, because a pulled ad is wasted spend. Three rules bear directly on Instagram creative in Australia.
The Australian Association of National Advertisers Code of Ethics requires a marketing communication to be clearly distinguishable as advertising to the audience it reaches. Ad Standards accepts labels such as #ad, “advertisement” and “paid partnership” as disclosure, while “spon”, “gifted” or simply tagging the brand are treated as insufficient, and the Community Panel upholds complaints on that basis, as in determination 0215-22.
The ACCC also treats paid Instagram advertising as conduct in trade or commerce, so the misleading and deceptive conduct and false representation provisions of the Australian Consumer Law apply to your ad copy and to any price claim inside it. The ACCC’s advertising and selling guide is the reference. In practice, every claim in the creative needs to be substantiable before it goes live.
Where To Take Your Instagram Budget Next

We are a Meta Business Partner and a Google Partner with over 15 years in the industry, and our office is at 5/106 Fison Ave W, Eagle Farm. Accounts are run online, so we work with clients in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide the same way we do across Brisbane.
Managed Meta work with us follows a three-step approach: 01 Discovery, 02 Execution, 03 Scale. A retainer covers campaign management, a set number of new creative concepts each month, a plain-language report, a monthly call and a named person on your account.
One client put it this way: “We have been with Alex at Purge Digital for over 5 months now and could not be happier with the customer support and the performance of our ads have been exactly what was promised.” Daniel Fischle, 05/05/23.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Should I Spend Per Day?
Daily budget is the wrong unit to decide on first. Set the monthly figure your conversion volume and margin can justify, then divide it across the ad sets you are actually running. A daily budget spread too thinly across too many ad sets starves all of them.
Is There A Minimum Spend?
Whatever technical minimum the platform applies per ad set is not the number that matters. The real minimum is whatever generates enough weekly conversions for the system to optimise on, and that is set by your cost per conversion, not by the platform.
Do I Need A Certain Number Of Followers?
No. Paid delivery is bought through the auction and does not depend on your follower count. A credible profile does help conversion, because people who tap through to your account before enquiring want to see that the business is real and active.
Are Instagram Ads Dearer Than Facebook Ads?
They are bought in the same auction and reported together in most accounts, so the comparison is placement by placement rather than platform by platform.
Why Does Ads Manager Disagree With My Sales?
Ads Manager reports conversions against attribution windows and includes modelled results, while your CRM counts what was actually booked. Expect a gap, agree which source you will judge cost against before the campaign starts, and hold to it.
